Metal Film Resistors compared to other types of Resistors in Audio Systems

It is a matter of constant debate and discussion among people interested in audio technology whether metal film resistors are indeed better than other resistors, such as carbon composition resistors and wire wound resistors, when it comes to reproducing sound. There are many sides to this argument; for the benefit of general readers, this article will take a brief look at this issue.

We will first look at the issue of metal film resistors versus carbon composition resistors. It is said that carbon composition resistors produce more ‘noise’ than metal film resistors, which reproduce sounds with far more clarity. Those who are avid defenders of carbon resistors maintain that they are more ‘warm’ in sound than metal film resistors, whose sound clarity they characterize as actually being ‘tinny’.

They say that the so-called noise you get with carbon composition resistors is really one of the factors that contribute to the atmospherics of the reproduced sound. Another argument is that it is not about getting a better sound, but a ‘different’ sound.
