Wire nuts as the name suggests are used to hold two or more wires together for proper wire management or securing them to save space. In order to get the best from these wire management tools, it is important that you select the right wire connectors sizes and also carry out their proper installation.
Selecting Wire Nut Sizes
The best way to select wire nut sizes required by you is to pick them up based on their colors (this is the standard used by all branded manufacturers)
- Yellows – 2 number 12s 3 number 14s
- Tans – up to 3 number 12 wires, 4 number 14s
- Reds – up to 5 number 12s, 3 number 10s
- Grey – 4 number 10s, 3 number 10s 2 number 8s
- Blues ( big ones ) – , 3 number 8s 2 number 6
Hence, from the above it can be conferred that yellows & reds cover most household needs. However, note that some manufacturers of these tools have different dimensional criteria. Hence, the best way to try these wire nuts is to use them for the intended purpose. All you have to do is screw the nut on. If it is the right size then it will twist them in the correct direction. On the other hand if it is too small then the wires will not go in and if it is too big it will not tighten.
