Repairing LCD Monitor – 4 Helpful Tips for Repairing Faulty LCD Monitors
Repairing LCD monitor is fun and exciting. You know, the funny thing is I used to hate working on LCD monitors because of their intricate circuitries…
See, I’ve repaired countless of CRT monitors in the past. Troubleshooting CRTs was easy as pie so most problems can be solved pretty quickly…
But it’s a different ball game with LCD monitors…You see, LCD monitors contain a good deal of databus lines which are packed with digital signals.
So in the beginning, to me…repairing LCD monitors was like fixing a space shuttle! However, with some practice and lots of help from a highly organized photo instructional repair guide, I had all the troubleshooting and repairing techniques down to a T.

Well, now I’m having so much fun fixing defective LCD monitors, so I feel it’s time I share the joy with others. Yes, I’m going to share some troubleshooting tips that would help you solve a couple of very familiar LCD monitor problems.
(1) First, let’s talk about the tools that you need for troubleshooting and repairing LCD monitors…
The tools that you’ll probably use the most are: capacitor ESR meter, digital multi-meter, oscilloscope, flyback tester (for measuring SMPS main winding among other things), high voltage probe, and a magnifying glass preferably with 35X capability.
(2) Next, let’s talk about complete visual analysis…
As soon as you remove the cover and internal casing, initiate a complete visual analysis. You check the board for any burnt components, swollen capacitors, poor solder connections, hairline cracks and things like that.
(3) No power problem…
For this type of problem, I usually have all the electrolytic capacitors situated in the power supply tested with an ESR meter. You want to make sure the components are not shorted so this test is necessary. Also, don’t forget to test the semiconductors.
(4) Electrolytic capacitors replacement tip…
105 Celsius is the typical temperature rating of electrolytic capacitors. However, if you’re unable to find 105 Celsius capacitors, you can actually use lower temperature rating e-caps such as 85 Celsius.
But make sure the 85 Celcius capacitors are of high quality. The problem with 105 electrolytic capacitors pre-fitted by the manufacturers is that they tend to be low in quality. As a result, they get swollen from heat fairly quickly.
