Definition:
“Digital temperature controller is a programmable instrument and as the name implies used to control temperature where in direct digital program control code can be used or customized for the intended use and the typical features associated with these instruments includes setpoints, controllers, outputs and alarms. Usually all the digital outputs are controls from control devices whereas analogue inputs work with variable sensing devices measuring voltage or current. Primary digital outputs from these instruments are used as relay contacts for either starting or shutting off the equipments”.
Introduction to Digital Temperature Controller
As we know temperature, controller is required to keep the desired temperature at the specific value and for example, you can visualize a thermometer or thermostat that we use in our homes. Temperature controllers in hot water heaters act by maintaining and controlling the overall temperature at certain preset value. Ovens also have digital temperature controllers where they maintain and control actual temperature inside the oven and due to certain reasons, if it falls below that level then it is regulated again at the preset point by reheating the coils or heater. Almost in every device where temperature needs to be maintained at a specific value uses these devices to monitor and control the inside temperature so when it senses temperature is going beyond set point or dropping below set point then it automatically regulates the temperatures and brings it back to the preset or desired temperature.
- Types of Digital Temperature Controller
There are mainly two types of digital controller’s open loop and closed loop controllers
Open Loop: This is one of the most basic forms of temperature controllers wherein the controller goes on with heating or cooling continuously despite the concern of actual output.
Closed Loop: This is advanced version of temperature controllers and far more efficient that open loop controllers due to its ability to measure the output temperature constantly and maintain the desired output at the constantly.

Actually all the controllers have several common parts like inputs, used to measure variables that have to be controlled and in this case, there is only one parameter “temperature” is controlled.
Inputs: As we are talking about digital controllers then these specifically designed controllers will have digital inputs but in reality different types of inputs exists. Always the input sensors and signals vary depending on the process to be controlled. Some common variety of inputs sensors are thermocouples and resistive thermal devices including linear inputs such as mV and mA whereas, typical standardized thermocouples are J,K,T,R,S,B, and L among others
Outputs: Opposite to Inputs, every controller should contain an output where in they are used to carry out different processes including controlling a specific process, initiating an alarm and to transmit the process value to the logical control of programmer or recorder. Some commonly provided outputs are relay outputs, solid-state relay, drivers, triac and linear analogue outputs.
- Parameters used in Digital Temperature Controller
Setpoint: This is a targeted value set manually by operator to keep it functioning steadily at the same value, for example if operator sets a target value for 30ºC then the controller will stabilize the functions of the equipment exactly at the setpoint.
Alarm Point: These values are generally set to indicate when a process has reached at the specific described condition. Usually there are several values where in the alarm value is set because high alarm means when the temperature has gone beyond setpoint and low value means when the temperature has dropped below set value.
Loop Alarm: Controller is also equipped with certain properties to detect any flaw in the system internally or externally. For example if the output signals are 100 % and the input sensors are not detecting any change in the temperature for a certain period of time then it automatically detects the broken loop.
Deviation Alarm: This is also set manually set some specific value plus and minus from the set point to monitor the processed setpoint and it alarms the operator when it detects any deviation in the setpoint program. Usually these alarms are band alarms that are set to be activated either within or outside a designed temperature band. For instance if the set point is set at 150 ºC then deviation alarms are set to ±10 making high value 160ºC and low value 140ºC.
- Common Uses of Digital Temperature Controller
Actually, these instruments are used in wide variety of industries wherever there is a manufacturing and operations procedure in need of temperature controlling like plastic extrusion, injection-molding machinery, thermo-forming machinery, packaging machinery and food processing or food packaging industry. Temperature controllers are also uses in various labs and blood banks to maintain the control the required temperature required for different procedure.
