Test Probe Questions
Testing a Laptop AC Adapter
Power adapters (or power supplies) are a ubiquitous part of our electronics-laden lifestyle. A power adapter takes the output of one power source, like a 120-volt AC wall socket, and converts it to a different output, for example a 19.5-volt power supply for a laptop computer. Usually these devices work dependably and without worry. But if you find the electronics devices that you have connected to a power adapter are not working properly or that their batteries are not charging, there’s always the possibility that the power adapter is not doing its job. With the right tool, however, you can check the output of your power adapter and see if that’s the source of the problem.
Set your multimeter to the proper range for measuring the output of your power adapter. Take into account the voltage and the amperage you’ll be measuring. Consult the manual for specifics on how to set your particular model of multimeter.
Touch the probes of your multimeter to the corresponding portions of the power adapter’s plug and note the readout. Compare that with the rated output of the power adapter. If it varies significantly, replace the power adapter.
Remove the battery from the laptop. The battery is located on the bottom of laptops and is held in place with a latch. This latch can be released by sliding a latch or pressing a release button, depending on the brand and model of laptop you own. Once the latch is released, the laptop can be slid from the battery bay.
Insert the AC adapter jack into the AC adapter outlet on the laptop. The AC adapter outlet is a small circular hole, normally on either side of the laptop. Insert the opposite end of the adapter into an electrical outlet.
Press the laptop “Power” button one time. If the laptop turns on, the AC adapter is properly functioning. If the laptop doesn’t power on, attempt using a different electrical outlet if the laptop still won’t power on, the AC adapter should be replaced.
Read the voltage on the multimeter’s display. The AC/DC adapter is faulty if you see a lower voltage than the label specifies. Move and bend the cable near the output jack from side to side. The cable is damaged if the voltage reading fluctuates.
Plug the adapter’s power cord into the wall outlet. Place the black voltage probe onto the outside ring of the adapter’s output jack. Do not allow the two voltage probes to touch each other.
