How to Correct Double Tapped Circuit Breakers
Double tapped circuit breakers are the single most widespread electrical flaws that i discover while undertaking home inspections, and they are typically among the least difficult flaws to fix. Right now I’ll describe just what double tapping is, when it’s and isn’t an issue, why it is an issue, and how to take care of this condition.
Double tapped wiring is fine if the breaker was created for two wires. If your breaker was made for two wires, it will say so directly on the breaker, and the port will be made to hold two wire connections in position. This is suitable. To my understanding, the only manufacturers which make breakers that can be double tapped are Square D and Cutler Hammer… but not all of their breakers can be double tapped. When the circuit breaker is not meant to hold two wires, the wire connections could come free at some point in the future, even if they feel very tight right now. Loose wire connections can lead to heating up, arcing, and perhaps a fire.
How to fix: The repairs I’m going to list below are a few typical strategies to dealing with double tapped circuit breakers.
Pig Tail – This is generally the easiest and best repair. The offending wire connections simply get disconnected from the circuit breaker, connected to a single wire with a wire nut, and that single wire gets connected to the circuit breaker. Now, I know exactly what you’re thinking: “What’s so tough about that?” The answer is nothing. This is a quick and easy fix.
Different Circuit Breaker – An additional simple repair would be to replace the breaker with a type that is made for two wires, as long as the panel is made for it.
If there are more issues going on aside from just a double tap, the repair could easily get a lot more involved. For example, if a homeowner finished off a basement and added a circuit for the basement bedroom on to the breaker for the bathroom receptacles, simply adding a pig tail for the wires wouldn’t be an effective repair, because the bathroom receptacles can not be on a shared circuit. In this case, the wire connections will have to be split off on to two separate breakers. There are a few ways to achieve this:
Add A Circuit Breaker – If there is space in the panel, an additional breaker may be added, and the wires split off to the two different breakers.
If a panel will accept conjunction breakers, it’ll say so within the panel, and the specific locations where tandem breakers can be used will be identified. A panel may allow all tandem breakers, no tandem breakers, or some tandem breakers.
When none of the above solutions are possible, the repair might require replacement of the panel with a larger one, or the addition of a subpanel. This would obviously get much more expensive.
