Mystery Shoppers – Steps to Get Paid On Time

When you first become a mystery shopper, you will find that you will have to put money out to perform your shops (example, restaurant visit, store merchandise, etc.), then get reimbursed afterward.  Obviously the mystery shopping company would not want to pay shoppers first, then hope the shopper follows through with their scheduled shop.

So, the initial burden has to be on the shopper.  As a shopper, how do you proceed to make sure mystery shopping becomes a plus for you, and not a financial burden?

First, tread lightly. When you work for a company you do not have any experience with, check up on them.  There are many forums online, such as mysteryshopforum.com, or volition, where you can do a search of potential companies you are considering doing work for.  You can also do a general internet search, such as “company name” to see if it comes up on any forums.

If the company has no negative remarks about it, you might decide to proceed.  The first thing not to do is accept an assignment where you have to put a lot of money out, such as a $200 reimbursement job.  I own a mystery shopping company.  We do one very well known high end restaurant in Florida.  The reimbursement limit is $120.  When I see a new shopper spend only $80 (by not ordering alcohol, or appetizers, or dessert) and they just order the minimum necessary, I think to myself, “They are smart.”  Best to check us out before spending a lot of money.

Another reason to do that is to see how fast the company pays.  This will vary from company to company.  We pay in 30 days and that is the norm, but I have seen occasional online complaints about companies not paying when they say they will. 

I also conduct mystery shopping workshops and once met an audience member who did a shop for a company and never got paid.  I believe this is a rare experience because it’s in the best interest of the mystery shopping company to keep their reputation in tact. Of course I then asked the audience member if he called the company to find out the status of his late payment.  That individual said he had not.  I don’t understand that!  Never be shy about checking on the status of a payment if it’s later than the stated time frame.

Once you are comfortable with the reliability of a company, then mystery shopping can be a fun sideline that can produce some nice side income for you. For more serious income, you might consider getting your own clients.
