Major Directions in LED Research

LED lighting, as mentioned many times before, has been part of our daily lives for many years now, mainly as a form of signal lighting in appliances or in the digital display of a calculator or watch. Recently however, LED light bulbs has become the hottest energy-saving products promoted not only by the market but also green organizations and our governments. This definitely suggests that opting for LED solutions is worth the investment, and also encourages manufacturers to put more emphasis on and effort into research in the field. Philips for instance stopped financing research in CFL lighting and switched its efforts to LED research. Major companies in LED lighting also began to combine efforts in research, such as the above mentioned Philips and CREE.

 

When it comes to household use of LED light bulbs, the main issue is obviously creating a cheaper and brighter form of white light included in the same size of bulb as a traditional filament light. Since the size of the light bulb is limited, and the requirements for light intensity are very high, researchers need to work on several fields of the issue. The light intensity of a single, white light LED is challenged and worked on every day. In February CREE created a single LED that emits 208 lumens from one Watt.

LED is a form of solid state lighting (SSL), and much of the photons generated get trapped within the casing. One of the ways researchers try to create more intensive white light is by increasing the number of microscopic holes in the casing of LEDs, to let the photons through. A team of researchers at the University of Glasgow was successful in finding a cheaper way of producing such LED lights.

Another team of researchers at the University of Cambridge, however increased LED light intensity by using a less expensive way of producing creating gallium-nitride semiconductor material, also fixed on a silicon base. These lights are expected to appear on the market by 2012.

Increased intensity LEDs may already be available, placing them into the limited space of a light bulb is a difficulty. LEDs are very sensitive to heat, and lose their lifespan and light intensity due to this very easily. High power light-emitting diodes generate more heat than other technology LEDs (as they emit more light too), therefore heat management within the light bulb is a crucial issue. Another direction in LED lighting technology development is the design of bulbs dealing with thermal management for the LEDs with growing intensity.

Due to the increase in efforts put into research in the field of LED lighting, major developments in product quality are expected. In the near future LED light bulbs will be replacing even 100W incandescents, with more light intensity and lifespan as long as 100 000 hours.
