IEC 61439 standard and Schneider Electric challenge
The new IEC 61439 standard improves safety and performance in electrical assemblies. Schneider Electric has been closely involved in the new standards development, and it is now a specialist in their application. Indeed, Schneider Electric was one of the first to recognise the limitations of the IEC 60439 standards and, 10 years ago, the company suggested that the International Electrotechnical Commission review and improve the IEC 60439 series of standards.
How can we explain Schneider Electric involvement in establishing new IEC standards?
Jean Pascal Tricoire Schneider Electric’s CEO, explains us the company’s active role in the IEC:
“Total energy consumption will double from now until 2050, the electrical energy consumption will double from now until 2030. The second thing that will change a lot is the urgency about climate change on carbon dioxide reduction; we know that if we want to preserve the planet we have to divide by 2 the carbon dioxide emission in the next forty years. So multipled by 2 in terms of consumption, divided by 2 in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, that means we have to improve the energy intensity that every thing we do by a factor of 4. For everything we do, we have to consume one fourth of what we used to consume.
With Schneider Electric new technologies we can reach 30% to more than 50% energy savings. More or less 30% in existing buildings, till 50 to 70% in new buildings.
Therefore, governments have a rule in regulations, in standards so that innovation in the field of efficiency will develop. This is why Schneider Electric has always been very active on every part of IEC. We established together the standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency which were needed. The second thing is that Schneider Electric believes in a global world, in an industry of the planet and the IEC is the best place to be driving the standards for the future.”
These are the reasons why today, 100% of Schneider Electric switchboards architectures are tested and comply with IEC standards, including the new IEC 61439- 1&2 standards.
