Four Tips for Safe Air Sampling Procedures
Air sampling measures the air quality of an environment by measuring and analysing the contaminants present in a sample taken from that environment. It is an important safety process as it can identify the presence of potentially harmful contaminants, particularly man-made chemical compounds in the atmosphere, before the damaging effects of these contaminants show up on the body. It is therefore of utmost importance that sampling of air is conducted safely and accurately, to properly safeguard the health of workers and other people exposed to potentially hazardous conditions.
Following are four tips safe air sampling procedures.

- Install Direct Reading Instruments: Direct reading instruments are designed to measure the presence of a specific pollutant, such as a gas, vapour, or particulate, in the air and determine how much an individual might be exposed to that particular component. These instruments aid the process by displaying real-time, or near real-time readings of air quality, allowing for constant air monitoring if necessary.
- Employ Spectroscopic Analysis: Spectroscopic analysis involves passing light through a sample to gain information on its contents. In the air sampling context, this is done in the filter of a sampling device. As air passes through the filter, spectroscopy will be used to determine the rate at which the contaminant is present in the sample. This provides a more complex, qualitative air sampling analysis.
- Wear a Personal Device: Personal sampling devices are designed to sample and measure the air that directly surrounds the individual wearing them. They are made to be worn unobtrusively on the head, like a normal cap lamp. These devices are particularly suitable for coal miners, who may be exposed to high levels of silica dust, and people working in chemical labs who may be exposed to a range of harmful gases. Personal sampling devices of air help to monitor the health of an individual closely for immediate risks.
- Take Samples Regularly and Know Your Limits: It must be conducted regularly to properly evaluate the air quality of an environment. Consideration must be given to when a workplace is most populated and when contaminants are more likely to be present in the air. Additionally, the acceptable limits for each potentially harmful contaminant must be known, to ensure the area can be evacuated or ventilation increased when needed. An air sampling process is useless without knowledge of acceptable air quality!
A proper air sampling procedure is an integral safety procedure in any industrial setting.
