Computers have become an essential part of everyone’s life. All our work depends on computers in one way or another.
In such a case it is very important for a person to be properly informed about computers. Computers have lot of parts. Some are classified as Input devices and some as Output devices. Pointing devices are devices which are used most by a person when operating a computer. They come under the classification of Input devices as they help a user to input data and commands into a computer system. Some of the main examples of pointing equipment are:
One of the most famous forms of pointing device is a Mouse. It is one of the most widely used computer accessory all over the world. Almost every person in this world has used the mouse at one point of time or another. A mouse normally controls the cursor present on the computer screen. You can click, select or drag anything present on a computer screen with the help of a mouse.
Another famous pointing device is the Touchpad. It is similar to mouse in functionality but is different in shape. A mouse is very convenient to use with a desktop but a laptop user cannot carry a mouse everywhere. Therefore, companies invented Touchpad which is a flat bed mouse incorporated into the laptop. These are basically flat where you use the touch of your fingers to facilitate the movement of cursor on the computer screen.
Space ball is a device that is used by graphic professionals for 3-D designing. It is not an everyday use device and requires some expertise to operate.
These days pointing devices have taken the form of Touch screen devices. It is essentially a screen which has touch screen capabilities. You can just straight away touch the portion of the screen you want to affect. Touch screen devices are generally expensive in nature and are therefore used by a limited number of people.
Another very good although rarely used pointing device is a light pen. In terms of functionality it is different from other pointing devices. It is just used to highlight any specific information on the computer screen and is mostly used for presentations.
A joystick is a device that is used by gamers to play video games. It is handheld device that can do a lot more than just clicking and selecting.
