How PLC Flow Control Operates and What its Benefits Are
The use of compressed air during manufacturing processes eats up much electricity or fuel, depending on what type of generator used. Air knife blow off systems, for instance, rely on pressurized air to do its job of cooling, chip removing, or conveying. In order to save on utilities, gauges and regulators are bought and installed, but they still depend on human intervention. Wouldn’t it be great to have a smart device that remotely controls the supply of compressed air? With today’s technology, there is now a solution, the PLC flow control.
This unit is more than just a regulator. It carries inside a small microprocessor called the programmable logic control (PLC). It is equipped with a sensor to detect parts passing through the conveyor for dusting or drying off. A signal, then, is sent to the solenoid of a standard air blow off unit that triggers the release of compressed air through the shims or holes. When parts have gone through the blowing process, the supply is cut off again for a two-second delay before the next batch comes.
With the presence of a PLC flow control, perfect timing is always ensured, because this device no longer adheres to a preset timer. As long as it does not sense any item that needs cooling or cleaning, no cubic of compressed air is consumed. The efficiency of this flow control unit is such that it is said to bring down compressed air consumption by as much as 70 percent, which is also equivalent to as much as US$1,000 annual savings on electricity.
Although normal a regulator that uses timer allow pre-setting, it still needs to be checked for calibration regularly. But PLC control is already equipped with the technology of today’s computers. It is a smart device that minimises significantly the need for personnel intervention. Another way of putting it is that the PLC reduces, if not eliminates, incident of human error during product assembly, manufacturing, or processing.
The PLC can be plugged with ease to any plug, whether it is on 110V or 220V, which makes it suitable and ready for use in any city, state, or country. It is compact enough if space is restricted and its photoelectric sensors can also withstand elements in harsh working conditions. Any blow off phase of the manufacturing cycle that needs automation is now possible with the PLC flow control system. Anything substance to it can compromise efficiency and, down the road, profitability.
