Maintenance Recruitment: Job Requirements of a Maintenance Mechanic
The manufacturing industry is one of the largest sectors of employment in the United States. The industry accounts to almost 1/3 of the total employment rate in North America. An electronic company alone can employ up to 10,000 people. The manufacturing industry includes workers in aircraft, plastic, automobile, and household equipment factories.
The maintenance mechanic holds one of the most common jobs in manufacturing firms. A maintenance mechanic oversees the operation of large industrial machines. He or she ensures that the factory’s machinery and equipment are always in top shape. There are two types of factory machines: manual and digital machines. Manual machines have complex spare parts. They require frequent maintenance, checkup, and lubrication. On the other hand, digital machines require routine software system checkups and debugging. A maintenance mechanic must be adequately equipped with the repair and maintenance skills needed for both types of machines.
Mechanics must know how to troubleshoot engine dysfunction of manual machines. Likewise, they must know how to restore normal software operations. Maintenance mechanics complete a post-secondary training program in community colleges. They are equipped with basic knowledge on principles of engineering and electronics.
Maintenance recruitment agencies require mechanics to complete a mechanical aptitude test. A mechanical aptitude test measures theoretical knowledge on basic engineering principles. It determines a mechanic’s knowledge of concepts in mechanical engineering, software engineering, electronics, computer technology, and project management. These are essential in the operation and maintenance of large-scale computers and machines in industrial factories.
Generally, a maintenance mechanic has three main tasks: system setup, emergency repairs, and scheduled maintenance. During system setups, maintenance mechanics collaborate with the maintenance manager or plant mechanic. They discuss software systems and machine components for new apparatus. A maintenance mechanic examines engine conditions during test runs. One takes note of necessary changes in equipment. This is why extensive knowledge of engineering principles is essential in maintenance recruitment.
Mechanics repair defective engines and damaged software. In some factories, mechanics are required to be available 24/7, in case of sudden engine breakdown. Therefore, HR managers ask about the availability of maintenance mechanics during maintenance recruitment. These mechanics must be able to attend to repair calls of their employers at any time of day. To prevent the problems this need may cause, most factories have two to three fulltime mechanic workers to cover the 24-hour on-call repair shift.
