Choosing Correct Digital Multimeters for Safety
We are all fanatics, and rightly so, when it comes to safety; we wear helmets and kneepads while biking, seatbelts while driving and rubber footwear while handling electrical devices. Of course, just purchasing safety equipment is not as important as ensuring that it properly designed. While buying helmets, for instance, we ascertain that they are reinforced, have a face visor and any other protective measure we can think of. Similarly, while selecting safety equipment for electrical work, we must ensure that they are designed with appropriate levels of protection to withstand hazards in the working environment.
While working with electricity, engineers, electricians and technicians use digital multimeters for measurement purposes. Depending on the application, they may opt for fixed or handheld multimeters. To ensure optimal levels of protection, these need to be selected carefully. As a rule of thumb, an RMS multimeter with a voltage rating higher than the circuit being measured is considered to be the safest.
Ideally a non-contact voltage detector should be built into the digital multimeter to safely withstand such peak transient voltages. Higher current circuits can deliver much more energy into a fault than lower ones, thus making them potentially more hazardous. It is essential that every RMS multimeter be independently tested to ensure safety compliance. All commercial bench-fixed and handheld multimeters must be marked “CE”, indicating their conformance to the health, safety, environment and consumer protection requirements established by the European Commission.
Apart from this, there are certain safety precautions that must be followed while using any digital multimeter. First and foremost, the concerned circuit should be completely discharged before connecting or disconnecting a multimeter. The RMS multimeter must be is in series with the circuit for current measurements and in parallel for voltage measurements. Measurement must always begin with the highest voltage or current range to avoid mishaps. While measuring resistance with a multimeter, power must never be applied to the circuit and the “0 ohms” reading must be re-adjusted if the resistance range is changed. After usage, the multimeter must either be turned off or switched to the highest AC voltage position.
These are a few of the parameters to be kept in mind to safeguard against common electrical hazards while selecting and using digital multimeters. Choosing the right multimeter will ensure safety not only for yourself but also for people and electrical equipment around you.
