Electric Motors and their Job
Revolutionizing the production systems around the world, electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and help in giving motion to generate more in short period time. The modus operandi of electric motor is simple i.e. it operates through the interaction of magnetic fields and current-carrying conductors which ultimately generates force that is then used to power other machine or tool.
The same process when reversed produces electrical energy from mechanical energy e.g. generators, dynamo, etc. However, there are certain electric motors that do the two together i.e. traction motor on a vehicle. It is quite important to know that electric motors and generators are considered electric machines. Used fundamentally to power fans, blowers, pumps, machine tools, power tools, home applications, disc drives, etc., electric motors are indispensible.
Then there are two kinds of electric motors; the first ones powered by direct current DC, another ones powered by AC or alternative current. For instance a battery powered portable device or motor vehicle is powered by direct current. However, a central electrical distribution grid or inverter is powered by AC or alternative current. Motors can be found even in small wrist watches which can be considered the smallest electric motors.
Medium-sized electric motors can be found in the devices that require highly standardized dimensions and characteristics so that convenient mechanical power for industrial uses can be produced. Apart from small electric motors in wrist watches, there are huge sized electric motors used in propulsion of ships, pipeline compressors, and water pumps, etc. Nevertheless, such a work needs power in the millions of watts.
The differentiation or determination of electric motors depends a lot upon various factors including of the source of electric power, internal construction, application, type of motion the motor gives, etc. amongst others. Historical evidence show that Michael Faraday in 1821 showed for the first time that electrical energy can be converted into mechanical energy by electromagnetic means. This was a revolutionary invention that brought significant transformation in industrial revolution.
Whether simple or complex, an electric motor generally has six parts including of Armature or rotor, Commutator, Brushes, Axle, Field magnet, and DC power supply of some sort. Though it is not a necessary responsibility from any person to know how a motor works, by understanding how a motor works a person can know hell a lot about magnets, electromagnets and electricity which will not only further his information but also help in managing the electric motor well.
