Motor Sport Events 2011, a Sri Lankan attraction
Despite being a comparatively small nation Sri Lanka has more than its share of motor racing enthusiasts, including talented drivers and riders and the myriad of fans who follow the competitive scene closely. Many different motoring events may be enjoyed in the island nation, including circuit racing, rallying, super cross and hill climbs. Typically motor sport events in Sri Lanka include different categories for motor vehicles of differing engine capacities, power and performance.
Circuit racing naturally commands a vast fan following in Sri Lanka. Typically the different categories for races include such vehicles as formula cars, high performance competition vehicles (such as the Mitsubishi Evo) as well as more modestly equipped cars. Similarly the motorcycle events are categorized by engine capacity and performance; sophisticated high performance motorcycles as well as more sedate two wheelers may be seen in the different classes. Sri Lanka boasts many accomplished circuit racing specialists, many using sophisticated automotive machines. Major circuit racing events include the Pannala Circuit Meets which are organized into several rounds including a night race, and the Katukurunda Circuit Meet.
Rallying also attracts great interest in Sri Lanka. Competitors driving state of the art off-road vehicles vie for supremacy executing perfect ‘opposite lock’ techniques while amateurs in more mundane motors are not forgotten as there are separate events for them.
Not to be missed are the numerous super cross events with all the thrills and spills enthusiasts have come to expect in this sensational motoring spectacle. Specially constructed tracks are designed to bring out the best in the daredevil drivers and riders who have achieved exceptional skill in this enthralling sport. Well known super cross races include the Carlton Super Cross, Sigiriya Super Cross, Foxhill Super Cross, Walawe Super Cross, Cavalry Super Cross, Gunners Super Cross and the Gajaba Super Cross.
Hill climbs are also well represented in the local motoring scene, which is unsurprising given that the island nation contains many hills and mountains. Highlights include the Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb, Radella Hill Climb and Mahagastota Hill Climb.
