Analog Multimeter versus Digital Multimeter
A multimeter is an electronic measuring tool used for measuring voltage, resistance or continuity. The tool also measures the presence of Alternating Currents (AC) and Digital Currents (DC) in circuits. Also known as a Volt-Ohm meter, this instrument may be categorized into analog multimeters and digital multimeters, each having its own unique features and applications.
Analog Multimeters An analog multimeter is designed on a micrometer, and its needle moves along a scale calibration to make various measurements. Switched-range analog multimeters are relatively cost-effective but not user-friendly. Also, reading resistance scales on an analog multimeter is difficult to those lacking experience. When used as an ammeter, this multimeter exhibits extremely low resistance and high sensitivity with scales down to 50 µA.
On the other hand, measuring voltage is more convenient on an analog multimeter because of the ease in which the slowly changing voltage can be tracked by observing the needle.
The movement of the meter is extremely delicate and needs to be handled with care to avoid damages.
Digital Multimeters
Typically, a digital multimeter displays digits, though some may also consist of a liquid crystal display bar representing the quantity measured. A common tool for measuring voltage, the digital multimeter is a preferred voltmeter because of its higher resistance of 1 M or 10 M as against 200 in an analog multimeter on a similar range.
To be able to obtain accurate readings, the resistance of the meter must be minimum ten times the resistance of the circuit.
Though digital multimeters are more expensive than their counterparts, they usually offer better performance. Digital multimeters are usually more accurate and easier to use than analog ones. Even the simplest and most economical digital multimeters are equipped with a greater range of features. These multimeters also have more applications such as temperature sensors, frequency meters and capacitance meters.
Rise in demands have led to the development of industry-specific multimeters. For instance, it is important that electrical and automotive engineers plan long-term and invest in good quality multimeters that meet their measurement requirements. Consequently, automotive digital multimeters have found tremendous application among electronic engineers. Though precision may not be crucial in multimeter applications such as hobby electronics, reliability is. This is easily provided by multimeters such as automotive digital multimeters.
Overall, digital multimeters are among the most versatile and reliable temperature measuring tools available in the market, finding applications in sectors such as construction, food services, heating and a number of other industries.
