Teacher Stress – The Ticking Time bomb – How to put out the fuse
The fact that a delegate at the NUT conference in Harrogate could say that, ” I have seen a meteoric rise in work-related stress and on more than one occasion have had to support a member who has attempted suicide,” should be seen as a big wake up call for us all.
If teachers, at any level in the profession, are plagued with suicidal thoughts and can see no way out, then something is seriously wrong with not only the way in which our teachers and school leaders are prepared for their roles, but also with the support that they are given once they have been appointed.
Teachers and school leaders are encouraged through their statutory training to create nurturing and supportive environments for the children in their care, so that our young people can flourish and grow into healthy, well rounded individuals. But very little attention is given to what our teachers and school leaders need so that they can maintain their health and a sense of well being.
If the profession is ever going to reduce figures , such as those reported by the health and safety executive in 2000, stating that ’41.5% of teachers reporting themselves as “highly stressed“, it must wake up to the fact, that teachers are human beings not robots or machines. They cannot be expected to work flat out and not have some mechanism or system in place that enables them to ‘recharge their batteries’.
Some who are not in the profession, will say, “Well isn’t that what the holidays are for?’ But those of us who know the toil that teaching or leading a school can have on one’s own health, know that for a great majority, the holidays are the times when individuals not only stop [ I have heard of cases where headteachers either on retirement or on preparing to move to a ‘less stressful school' have literally dropped dead] but also succumb to illness; because their immune systems have become so depressed, as a direct result of their inability to either recognise or deal effectively with the symptoms of stress.
Teaching is a listening profession and if we are ever going to tackle this issue of increased stress and ill management of workloads, then teachers and school leaders must be given regular time and space to talk and to be listened to. As a listening tool, coaching is currently in vogue in many schools, but often in a limited form; as a strategy for raising standards and staff performance. In this context it has its purpose, but with a less draconian link to strategies for meeting government targets, it could be so much more.
It could be a tool for enabling teachers and school leaders to;
- Not only talk about the stress and challenges of their roles, but to come up with their own solutions for addressing them
- Create a much greater sense of equilibrium and build strategies for creating an effective work life balance
- Understand their coping strategies /habits [ that we all have for dealing with stress] and to assess which ones are serving them well and which ones need to change
Much has been made of late of the government’s recent proposal for a ‘Happiness Index’ to measure the state of the nation’s wellbeing. My assessment is that it will need more than a questionnaire to improve the happiness and wellbeing of the majority of our teachers and school leaders. What is needed is a real commitment to enabling every teacher and school leader to not only develop their personal tool set for leading and teaching our young, but to also develop the tools needed for effective leadership of self.
