Assisted Arm BJJ in Massachusetts – Assisted Arm Bar from Guard
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Massachusetts: Assisted Arm Bar from Closed Guard
In this week’s installment of his MMA Performance Professor Series, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts trainer Stephen Whittier of Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham, MA details an assisted arm bar from closed guard when an opponent attempts to recover from an arm drag.
This is an incredibly tight variation of the classic straight arm bar from the guard, which is much more difficult to defend because of the added leverage it provides to the guard player in BJJ.
As with most closed guard attacks, your offense is predicated on your ability to disrupt your opponent’s base and posture. Specifically, you can either break your opponent’s posture by bringing him down to you, or you can sit up and attack him. In this case, the threat to your opponent’s posture will come by way of your arm drag attempt.
Professor Whittier demonstrates on way to do this. He begins by getting a four-finger grip with both of his hands on the cuff of his opponent’s sleeve (of the arm framed on his chest); he then crunches and slightly lifts his shoulders off the mat, then in one rapid motion pops his opponent’s grip off of his lapel by simultaneously pushing away with his grips and dropping his shoulders back down — using the power of opposing forces.
As soon as the grip breaks off of his sleeve, Professor Whittier pulls the sleeve down and away across his (and his opponent’s) body for the arm drag.
At this point, if his opponent does not immediately defend by driving his shoulder and weight back into him in an attempt to square up, he will simply take the back. If the opponent does defend in this way, however, Professor Whittier shows that you can simply trap the dragged arm by bringing your own opposite arm over it so that you lock the forearm/wrist under your armpit.
Now you can wrap your free arm around the back of your opponent’s head until the hand can grab the gi at his armpit (on the opposite arm from the one you are attacking). From here, he explains, you will put your foot on his hip on the side of the arm you are attacking, then climb his back with your legs to get the proper angle to bring your far leg over his head to complete the lever and cinch in the arm bar.
A key detail he points out is how you frame with your free arm. Instead of releasing your grip, with the hand to push your opponent’s head away, you will pull down slightly on his head until you can slide your forearm over his head — never releasing your hand grip near the armpit — and then use your upper armpit and elbow to frame his head away.
Once properly positioned, simply curl down with your forelegs and lift your hips slightly for a very quick arm bar.
