Is Lead Acid Battery Worth to Use up to now?

Lead acid battery has been used for over 150 years. This is a strong proof that it is reliable, mature secondary batteries, globally manufactured and therefore a widely understood technology. In simple terms, lead acid battery is worth to use up to now though it contains lead and acid which is harmful for health.

Invented in 1859 by French physician Gaston Plante, lead acid batteries store electrical energy through a reversible chemical reaction. It uses a combination of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to convert electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back again. It changes from lead oxide when charged to lead sulfate when discharged.

Lead acid batteries with thicker electrodes can tolerate such “deep” discharges better than those with thin ones, but only at the expense of making a heavy battery even heavier.

You could not use the lead acid battery all the time. So give it a cool environment to store and keep batteries cool in hot climates. Heat dramatically reduces a battery’s life. And store the battery full charged. If you leave a battery unused for long periods of time, the battery will self discharge and might be sulfation, then not to store energy any more. Therefore if you must leave batteries unused, store them in a charged state. Storing discharged batteries leads to the inability of the battery to hold a charge.
