Things to Reflect on Before Buying a Chandelier
Chandeliers are made to float in a room as a key element of the decor. Too big and this fixture will overpower the area. Too small and it will appear out of place. Electric chandeliers saw the appearance of more efficient light sources for example paraffin and electric incandescent lamps and minimized the use of the crystal chandelier. It was propelled to a brand new standing as a decoration unto itself, even when unlit.
A chandelier can be described as fixture fixed on the ceiling with two or more arms holding lights. It had first been used in medieval churches and abbeys so as to efficiently illuminate large rooms and halls. During those times, a chandelier usually took the form of the wooden cross that has spikes as a way to secure it. From then on, chandeliers took on more elaborate forms. It was not only used for illumination purposes, it took on decorative and visual functions. It is therefore not surprising that chandeliers are found in palaces and residences of the affluent. Chandeliers in the end became a symbol of wealth.
To make sure your chandelier would be the right size for the room where it’ll hang, think about the next questions:
How high is the ceiling? Higher ceilings demand larger fixtures.
What would be the size and shape of the table or island? The chandelier must complement, not overshadow, anything you propose to suspend it over.
How large is the room you are attempting to light up? Again, be sure the chandelier will not be too large or too tiny for the room.
What is the form and design of the chandelier? Light, airy fixtures tend to look bigger.
To determine the appropriate size chandelier for a foyer add the dimensions together: Let’s say if the foyer is 12′ by 16′, add the 12 plus 16 to get 28. The proper size chandelier would then be 28″ diameter. This works for any room. Make sure the underside of the fixture will not hang more than 7′ from the floor. If windows are present, centre the fixture in the window so it would be seen from outside.
Placing a chandelier that is too small in a space is probably the biggest mistake because it’s very noticeable. The correct fixture in your foyer will create a welcoming atmosphere while providing you with the general light that you need to greet guests and assure a secure passage into your home.
