The Importance of ISO 9001 and ESD 20 20
If a business manufactures or handles electronic components, a different set of requirements is enacted to protect those products from electro-static discharge or ESD. The ESD system is documented through a set of processes and procedures in order to obtain an ESD 20 20 certification.
ESD 20 20 includes requirements which further document processes necessary to prevent the occurrence of ESD related defects. It covers a very broad spectrum including assembly, testing, inspection, handling, installation, and packaging of both electrical and electronic parts that may be susceptible to ESD damage.
The importance of the ESD 20 20 certification is that it has become an industry standard and is often required by many original equipment manufacturers or OEMs. It is also an absolute requirement when selling parts or products to aerospace contractors. It is an addition to the ISO requirements, but if your quality management system is very good, you may not be required to maintain both certifications.
The benefits of the ESD certification are that it can provide visible proof that your business is committed to an ESD program that is designed to improve the quality and integrity of sensitive electronic components. When properly implemented and maintained, it has shown to provide continuous improvement in those processes.
ISO 9001 is a set of requirements that covers all the key processes that determine how a business is monitored to ensure every product manufactured is of a high standard. It covers every aspect of the business including design, manufacturing, procurement, testing, rework, packaging, and auditing of the system. It is designed to create an environment of continuous process improvement.
Once ISO 9001 certification is accredited, it has a built-in process to maintain this level of excellence and must adhere to strict requirements to maintain that certification.
