Dealing the Children with Short Fuses
Children have varied natures. No two children have the same natures, though their interest in few things may be the same. There are children with short fuses; poor impulse control is prominent in them. This feature is very much associated to the boys, but some girls, including mothers are also a part of it. An element of hereditary link cannot be ruled out in this kind of temperament.
Short fuses or poor impulses are commonly taken as a variation of ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Insufficient and defective functions of the frontal parts of the brain cause ADHD. These parts are associated with self monitoring and behavior of the person. The child unthinking actions and impulsive behaviors results in the severe ADHD. These are really difficult child difficult to handle. In sole parent situations short fuses ADHD is quite common, as it is inherited from a parent. Inflexibility is at its peak in three to four year child. However, the fuse gradually lengthens with every passing year.
In school going children, instability and impulsiveness are two main issues. Even a minor or smallest of incident may trigger them for really an unforeseen response. Many people label them as, is that child mentally all right? These children get so furious and crazy at times with uneven moods. Bullies in school usually seek out these children as they are easy to provoke.
Those who have not come across such a response earlier are in no position to estimate the affects of this temperament on other lives and discipline, i.e. either in school or in home. Parents are usually in state dilemma, not to decide whether to treat them like other children or to back off. Most of the psychologists promote the path of peace rather than to invite the impulsive explosion.
Points to Focus
- While dealing with young child, anticipate the moods, try to prevent triggers and keep them calm as much as possible. With older child, it is better to make him realize the impact of his behavior on other, it is better to teach him the importance of self control.
- As far as possible avoid debate or argument with such children, as it triggers their mood.
- Keep things cool as cucumber and try to realize them the actual scenario.
- Be careful while playing with words. Use soft tone and selection of words should be important.
- If a child gets furious, it is better to leave him alone rather than arguing with him.
- Child time out can be a good option, if possible in severe conditions.
- Talk to them as much as possible in their calm states. This will somehow help them to realize the facts.
- Never take their hysterical actions as intentional or planned.
- Whenever an aggressor passes the aggressive period without violence encourages them.
- It is better to ask them to try on the self control techniques to control their impulsive behaviors.
- If the impulsive behavior of the child is a part of ADHD, it is possible to improve the behavior of a child through proper treatment.
