Solar Energy Feed in Tariffs: Explained

Wouldn’t it be great if instead of paying for electricity, you generated the majority of your own and major energy companies paid you for any excess produced? Well believe it or not this is actually possible and has been since April 2010, when the government introduced the Feed-in Tariffs scheme throughoutGreat Britain.

What is the Feed in Tariff Scheme (FITs)?

The FITs dictates that energy suppliers have to make regular payments to householders who generate their own electricity from renewable sources such as solar pv panels. It is compulsory for the big six energy suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, E.On, nPower, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy – to provide regular payments.

Who Qualifies?

There are criteria which must be met to qualify for the FITs. Either you must have had a renewable energy system installed by a MCS installer after April 2010 or the required technology installed between 15th July 2009 and 31st March 2010 and transferred to the FITs before 1st April 2010.

You must also make sure you have the relevant renewable technologies installed in your home. The scheme covers solar energy systems up to a size of 5 Mega Watts. Wind turbines, hydroelectricity and micro combined heat and power are also covered.

Remember that having a MCS certified solar heating installer install your renewable energy system is very important. You may not qualify for the FITs if you overlook this requirement.

How Do Feed in Tariffs Work?

The benefits of investing in solar panel installation and other forms of renewable energy systems are widely known, but the Feed in Tariffs can provide some further significant advantages to homeowners across the country.

Firstly, your energy supplier will pay you a set rate for each unit of electricity you generate. In the case of solar pv electricity, this rate will be set for 25 years. Secondly, you will also receive an export tariff by which, according to the Energy Savings Trust, “you will receive a further 3p/kWh from your energy supplier for each unit you export back to the electricity grid…when it isn’t used on site.” As result of producing your own energy and selling off the excess, you will notice considerable savings on your energy bills.

There are of course of a lot of questions for which you will still want answers. The best thing to do is to ask your MCS accredited solar panel installation company about Feed in Tariffs and they will be able to explain how the scheme works and the estimated savings you could benefit from. Depending on how much energy you export, you could earn over a thousand pounds per year offset against your electricity bills, according to the UK Energy Savings Trust.
