Digital Multimeters – The Three in One Device for All
Digital multimeters are today the most widely used measuring devices as they provide the triple function of an ammeter, a voltmeter and an ohmmeter. These devices can also be used to service electrical problems in various home and industrial applications. Here is detailed description of how it does all the three at one go.
Digital Multimeters as ammeters
Ammeters, as we all know are used to measure current. A digital multimeter when used as ammeter can measure the current flowing through a closed circuit by interrupting that circuit. However, it is to be mentioned here that it can only be connected in series. The unit if current is amps; hence the result appears in amps.
Digital Multimeters as ohmmeters
Digital multimeters can also be used as ohmmeters, to measure resistance. As an ohmmeter, it finds the resistance at any point by first unplugging the device from a wall outlet or battery source. In the process it actually passes some electric current from its own battery through the circuit. This is then used to measure the resistance by comparing the voltage sent out to what it receives. The unit of measurement of resistance is ohm.
Digital Multimeters as voltmeters
With digital multimeters, you can also perform the function of a voltmeter i.e. measure voltage. As a voltmeter, a multimeter can measure the amount of AC or DC voltage flowing through a circuit. Voltage is usually measured as the difference in potential energy between the two points and its unit of measurement is volt.
