Shunt DC generator is a generator whose field winding and armature winding are connected in parallel, and in which the armature supplies both the load current and the field current. Shunt generator is not a good generator to supply your electrical power since this generator has unstable out put power.
Shunt generator’s name is taken from the field. In generator there are shunt field in winding and if the generator uses two winding field it is called compound generator. People usually used compound because of the stability in producing voltage and current load.s
In shunt generator, amplifier excitation is connected in parallel to the rotor. Initial voltage generator is obtained from residual magnetism contained in a magnetic field stator. The rotor rotates in a weak magnetic field. The stator magnetic field will be strengthening by the resulting voltage, to achieve its nominal voltage.
Excitation amplifier is connected in parallel with the rotor. Initial voltage generator is obtained from residual magnetism contained in a magnetic field stator. The rotor rotates in a weak magnetic field; the resulting voltage will strengthen the stator magnetic field, to achieve its nominal voltage. Setting excitation current passes through the shunt winding regulated by shear resistance. The larger the shunt excitation current, the greater the resulting field shunt amplifier, and the terminal voltage increases until it reaches its standard voltage.
If shunt generator does not get its excitation power, then the electrical power also does not exist. And if the winding excitation is wrong or reversed then there will be no electrical power from the generator. Shunt generator’s voltage will drop if the load current is increased. This problem will not be found in compound generator which has two excitation amplifiers. The first amplifier is shunt while the second is series amplifier. In compound, strengthening the series winding will also increase the voltage if the current load is increased.
