Cisco offers compact switches without cooling fans for offices

Cisco provides five new switch models, which are silent devices without cooling fans and one of them can be supplied with electrical power using an Ethernet cable. All these new switches are aimed to be installed close to users.

Cisco wants these switches to be installed anywhere in the company’s building unlike the traditional Ethernet switches in the technical room. Its new models combine compactness and silence, so that they can be installed in points of sale, cabinets of liberal profession or classes of school. This market is estimated by the manufacturer at 1 billion dollar per year. It has, until now, summer especially approached by the rivals of Cisco with models at low prices or more compact and quiet, resulting from the catalogues from HP (and 3Com, since its repurchase), D-Link or Allied Telesis, all designed for small and medium businesses.

Cisco answers challenge of the price war with five models of 8 ports Ethernet (10/100 Mbit/s or 10/100/1000 Mbit/s), which try to combine compactness, advanced functions (security over Vlans, easy monitoring by a Cisco software) and energy effectiveness (detection of the inactive ports to put them in economy mode). The manufacturer does not break therefore the prices, since those start at 755 dollars to 1 995 dollars (600 Euros to 1 500 Euros approximately). The five switches have as a common point which is the nonexistence of cooling fans, thus reducing the level of ambient noise. They can be fixed at the wall or be placed under a counter or a desk.

There are three models, which include compact versions (4,4 X 26,9 X 17,2 cm), weighing 1 kg, belonging to the series of Catalyst 2960. They are simple layer 2 switches, having 8 ports offering bandwidths of 10/100 Mbit/s or 10/100/1000 Mbit/s.

One of these models (2960CPD-8PT-L) can be even deprived of local power supply. It can be supplied by electrical power remotely (up to 100 m) via the Ethernet cable by another switch, which equipped with function of power injection (POE, Power over Ethernet). Additionally, it is able to supply IP phones and wireless access points with electrical power though its 8 ports Ethernet PoE 10/100 Mbit/s.

The two other compact models, belonging to the series of Catalyst 3560, are switches offering bandwidths of 10/100/1000 Mbit/s with function of IP/IPv6 routing, but they are more cumbersome (4,4 X 26,9 X 21,8 cm) for a respective weight of 1,35 kg and 1,92 kg (with injection of PoE current).
