The multiple database to support PLC system

One of the key advantages of Windows PC-based control software is the removal of the multiple databases needed to support a PLC system. Because the software integrates the functions of the PLC, the operator interface, the programming PC, and offers real-time data access to other applications of software running in Windows, a single, common database can be applied across all of the tools.

Every the software element can access the similar database with a tag names single set. The points of I/O are constructed and specified tag names once, and the similar tag name is used through all of the applications of software. For instance, an output may be defined “Pump”. In the environment of programming, the pump would be switched on with an actions “Pump = ON”. The interface of operator could be generated to show the same output value by locating a pilot light graphic on the screen, double clicking, and picking the tag name of “Pump” from the tag list. The real-time simulation could react to the output being switched on by testing for the”Pump” value. Other applications of Windows could access the real-time Pump value throughout DDE or OPC with “Pump” in the call. The interface stations of Remote Operator running on divide PCs could contact the pump value directly, without configuring a divide database, by pre-pending a node name of remote PC’s to the tag.

The main advantage of using the single tag in PC-based control systems is the removal of human error. The engineer no longer needs to build and maintain four divide databases with four different configurations. PC-based control provides one database and a single tag entry common to all apparatus.

Mix & Match, Commodity I/O
Another key PC-based control benefit is the capacity of PC-based control to support multiple types of PLC I/O. The PC can join to and scan most industrial I/O with an I/O scanner card. For instances of typical I/O families comprise Genius I/O, Modicon Remote I/O, Allen-Bradley’s Remote I/O, as well as a number of the new open machine level buses for example Honeywell’s Smart Distributed System, Interbus-S, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Seriplex. A PC-based controller can combine several separate I/O families in the same PC by minimally installing scanner cards for every I/O family. For instance, if a legacy system with PLC remote I/O needs to be extended with an open device level I/O, the PLC can be substituted with 2 scanner cards and a PC.
