Day 02 Elephant Festival
The reception guy points me to the leaflet on the door – Elephant Festival isn’t held in it’s usual place this year. I got one of the tuk tuk drivers from outside the hotel to take me.
Arrived fairly late but managed to set a seat just to the right of the entrance area. Pointless sitting really as once the procession started, everyone piled onto the pitch. Most photos were ruined by my inexperience using my new camera but I got a few good ones.
A great day out, but I forgot to apply sun screen
My yahoo emails don’t work. My mobile doesn’t work.
Day 03 Holi.
Went out, walked for an hour or so down Chandpol Bazar road. let everyone colour my face, neck etc.. Snapped a few photos with my other cheapo camera, everyone wanted their photos taken. Showered. Showered… Sore around the face from either sunburn or some of that pink powder…Another great day.
Day 04
Tuk Tuk driver (Anwar) outside the Jaipur Inn said he would take me to places I wanted to visit..wish he’d set a price though.. He was supposed to take me to the elephant festival the other day but couldn’t make it and sent another driver. I’m guessing users of the Jaipur Inn probably remember their tuk tuk drivers name? Or maybe not.
We went to Jantar Mantar. My camera battery ran out half way though and I’d forgotten to bring more. Back to the hotel for other batteries.
Next, we Amber Fort – the walk up totally drained me, It’s just a walk, God am I that old Palace on the lake, stopped by the road to take some photos. Galta Monkey temple. – foolishly bought some bottled water ..wasn’t sure if it had a proper seal on it, oops.
I’ve had one or two trips to the toilet, but I’m sure it’s actually nerves, not the food or drink. Sometimes happens back home, no big deal, anyway I’ve got some rehydration sachets & Immodium tablets. Back to hotel. Anwar wants me to join his family later as a guest. It’s strange. I like the guy. He doesn’t know me. I don’t know him. We don’t even comunicate very well. I accept…
He drives us to to his humble home in Tagore Path, stopping once on the way to buy me a Sprite & bottled water reminding me not to drink tap, and then I’m introduced to his lovely family. One of his brothers is an ace musician called Abid. Whilst Anwar’s wife is preparing a chicken to eat, we go into another room & listen to Abid playing his musical insruments, and singing too. I’m not musically minded at all, & I wasn’t even sure of the name of the instruments he was playing (one was based on a violin and gave him painful looking marks on some of his fingers) The other was a type of box shaped mini piano with organ at the back.
I gladly gave the children my cheap camera to play with, They took a few good photos but as the room was fairly small, the flash was a bit over powering. I’ll try to photoshop a few when I get home & get them printed and sent over to India for Anwar.
Had diner. My first ever Indian meal…ever. The chicken fell off the bone and was coated in a hot sauce. Chappattis to soak up the juices and some sides of tomatos & radishes(?) Although Anwar’s wife tried to kept her face hidden at all times, I made sure she knew when I said her meal was fit for a king. Time to go back to the hotel. Phone numbers & emails are swapped & one of Anwar’s brothers askes me to phone if there’s any problem with transport.
Showered. The part of my neck where the teeshirt begins is shockingly red…but not really sore..and I’ve had a camera strap on there too… maybe time to pull the collar up for a few days. I love standing at the roof bar looking over the edge into the dark as the strong cool breeze blows.
Time in Jaipur is coming to an end. Packing. Still a bit paranoid about being told my train isn’t going tomorrow. Already been down to the station.. big queues so didn’t speak to anyone but the self servive PNR checking machine said exactly what my Cleartrip printout said: Confirmed A1, seat No etc..
Day 05
Up at 04:30. Anwar took me to Jaipur Station at 05:00.
Said bye bye to Anwar, paid him some Rupees as he hadn’t asked for any in all the time I’d spent with him. Promised to send him some photos when I got back to the UK.
The train left as expected at 6:10. ran fine, just late, but spent a bit of time finding the carrage, seat info..
Arrived in Gwalior. auto rik shaw to the hotel. Didn’t do anything all afternoon, felt a bit off colour. but the hotel’s A/C kept me well cool. Gwalior fort will have to wait until next visit.
Day 06
Straight to the train station. Gwalior to Jhansi. Ran fine Auto rik shaw to Orchha. Paid the driver R500, said he would pick me back up to in a few days time.
Booked into the Orchha Resort and spent an hour or so down by the river trying to sort out my new cameras problems.. Bed quite early. Someone was playing on drums and chanting outside by the (closed) pool. Didn’t bother me, found it quite relaxing…
Day 07
Orchha. Morning. Bought a ticket to see the Jehangir Mahal and all the other temples… Declined a guide, maybe a mistake, but was accompanied the whole trip by a wild dog which disappeared as quickly as it appeared. It didn’t ask for any Rupees.
Afternoon. Relaxing at the hotel. Wishing my emails would work…
Day 08
Didn’t do much today.. browsed the market area. Asked Hotel if I could pay for half a day because of my late train but they were fully booked. Went out and found another hotel (Shri Vanayak) booked one night for R500, bargin compared to the full rate of the other hotel. kept nipping to one of the cyber cafes to see if there was a chart made up for my train. Nope.
Bye bye Orchha. Highlights included the little boy who was trying to ride a bike which was 5 times too big for him & the pair of cows that decided they wanted to cross that bridge, causing traffic chaos.
The train from Jhansi to Varanasi left okay and nearly on time, but as fsg predicted, it was to get to it’s destination late (3 hours).
Day 09
Onboard that 11107 Bundelkhand, I Travelled 1st class for a change, although I’m not sure what the difference was between this and 2nd class. There was one other passenger. Slept on & off through the night. In the morning the other guy left and I was soon joined by a young boy who asked if it was okay if he came in. I smiled & nodded.
His name was Ritik, looked about 12, spoke good English. We asked each other questions, he took my guide book and helped me pronounce a few hindi words. Unfortunately Ritik’s Aunt then came in. Plonked herself flat out on the opposite seat and comunicated lots of questions through Ritik. Worked her way though my hand luggage, browsed one of my guide books, went through all the bits on my mobile and played music out load. I was fine with all this until she spotted my suitcase under my seat and I had to told her no when Ritik said she wanted to see my T Shirts. Swapped emails with Ritik. They left 30 mins before the train crawled into Varanasi.
One of the railway workers came in, sat down and held his hand out for R30. (for pillow usage apparently).
I was then joined by a helpful chap called abhishek, we chatted for a while, he was an engineer & worked in the food industry, similar to myself. He was on his way to Varanasi to stay with his father. We swapped emails, and as the train called into Varanasi, he said he would get me an auto rik shaw to take me to Scindhia Ghat. I’m sure he saved me some money here
The rik shaw driver driver dropped me off. He just pointed in the direction of a narrow street. Everytime I stopped to ask for directions, a group of stange looking tourists would pass me and then get in my way as they stopped every so often and waved in the air and chanted something. Honestly, I thought I stuck out, but these guys were all wearing the same clothes – white t shirt & white baseball cap… I just wanted to buy a semi automatic and shoot them all. Finally two young lads came to my aid & helped me down to the ghat and then up some steps to Scindhia Guest House. Knackered. Rest. Didn’t do much rest of day, Internet.. sunset watching.
Day 10
Last night I had asked the manager if he could organise one of the tours mentioned on flyers dotted about his reception walls.
Breakfast was vile. How to you src*ew up cornflakes. I’m thinking perhaps it was the milk as the milky coffee wasn’t that pleasant. Toast from now on.
9am today an auto rik shaw took me to Sarnath. A guide had been arranged, he had to be paid at the end. Nice place, wasn’t bothered about the textile shop visit at the art museum though. Taking a few photos in the afternoon. Tomorrow I want to visit Assi Ghat. I was going to walk this afternoon but got a bit freaked out walking by the burning ghat. Remembering the stories of tourists being told their cameras would be broken if they didn’t hand over $$. Turned back. Bumped into an old chap in reception. Pointed me to his (?) notice on the wall ‘Scindhia Ghat to Assi Ghat, hand rown, 6am R150. Perfect, sign me up.
Day 11
Boat trip. 6am. Thought I would be alone but there were 4 other passengers. I wanted to get off at Assi ghat to go to Sankat Mochan but the boat boy only went as far as Shivala ghat and turned back. Enjoyable enough..although I didn’t take too many photos as people were bathing and obviously put my camera away as we passed the burning ghat.
Asked the hotel manager to organise a boat trip to aarti in the evening. Nice. Took a few photos but most are rubbish.
Got a really good view, but all the rowing boats were clumped together & everytime I went to take a photo using a big zoom, bump…bump.
Assi Ghat tomorrow. will walk. Also find the gym behind Sankat Mocham, Book shop and boat back to Scindhia ghat.
Day 12
Got up too late. Apparently the best time to visit that kushti akhara near Sankat Mocham is before 8am. oops. Took the walk down to Assi ghat anyway and visited the Himalyan book store. Nice chap inside. There were several books I was interested, especially one on India photography, but adding all that weight to my suitcase was offputting. Found a small wrestling gym just up the steps from the Tulsi ghat sign. Empty though. Tried to find the Sankat Mocham temple but got lost, not helped by differing directions from people & non existant street signs. Walked back via the ghats. Nearly slipped on cow poo . Drenched with sweat when I got back.
Day 13
Taxi to the airport. Arrived too early. The place is empty. Puzzled why the departure board didn’t include my flight. Bumped into a few Spicejet workers a bit later who said my flight was indeed still running as scheduled so not to worry.
Arrived in Delhi, got the pre arranged cab to the hotel. My room at Smyle Inn is fine. A/C plus ceiling fan etc.. Only staying 2 nights. Staying a further 3 nights at Hotel Tara Palace, nearer old Delhi. This may be a blessing too as the hotel opposite (Hotel Unique) is allowing one of it’s customers to play excruciatingly loud banging music at night..well i’m not so sure music is the right description for a low murmour of people chanting (looped) followed by banging/rattling on drums(?) Bought some ear plugs
So first evening in Delhi was spent walking around Cannought Place having a look.
Day 14
Walking down Clemsford road looking for for the Hop on Hop off bus service. Bumped into a helpful young chap called Shakti. He offered to help me find it and got us an auto, which we never paid for. We ended up in some none descript place that had the cheek to use a HoHo map and asked me to choose places I wanted to visit. Nice try but outta there! Then Shakti took me to the proper place around the corner. Not sure if he was in on this but I thanked him for finding the correct place and offered him R100 for his time. He refused to take money. He gave me his number, said to call him the following day and we parted..
Bought the HoHo ticket (lasts two days) and had a great time. Didn’t visit all 20 places as some were of no interest and a few I wanted to save for day 2.
Evening..packed.
Day 15
Wanted to take an auto rik shaw from the train station area up to my next hotel near to the Red Fort.(Tara Palace). Should have been a 10 min ride but the stupid driver turned south straight away, recommended lots of hotels but didn’t seem to understand any of my english when it suited him. An hour later when we reached our destination he waited in the rececption area (tip from the manager?) I told the reception guy I hoped no one was tipping the driver.
Walked through the markets in the area, bought a few trinkets for people back home. Lots of people pushing Kingston memory sticks, got one but just for non essential backup.
Day 16
Been sick during the night.Wanted bottled water but the room service/telephone doesn’t seem to work.
Stay in most of the day, just popping out for water, Pepsi…
Day 17
Used my HoHo bus ticket again and visited a few sites that I missed the other day: Jantar Mantar, Raj Ghat & Safdarjung’s Tomb.
Back at hotel for 15:30 Walked down to Jama Masjid looking for these weekly bouts of kushti wresting that are supposed to take place every Sunday but found nothing.
Day 18
Early morning train to Haridwar. My Loney Planet Uttarakhand guide had corrupted and I wasn’t exactly sure what there was to do in Haridwar. Couldn’t find an internet cafe either. Just took some photos of the ghats, Lord Shiva etc..
Day 19
Today I wanted to take a cable car to the Chandi Devi temple. Walked all the way from the hotel, across that never ending bridge and was told to turn left at the bridge end by a few local shop keepers. I walked for ages, started an accent and walked more. No cable car. I did come across a sign with a cable car on it, but the text (as usual was in hindi.) It probably said ‘Ha ha you should have turned right instead of left, turn back now or else!’ I had only brought a bottle of Sprite with me, it was getting low & really warm. Finaly the top was insight, some nice guy offered to fill my empty bottle with a bit of cold water. Didn’t really help, I thought I was dying. Sat down in the shopping area…noticed the cable car but more walking uphill to get to the temple. I’d had enough. Cable car down. At the bottom my stomach begged me to find a bush and loose everything I’d drank/eaten for the past few hours. Felt great afterwards though!
Day 20
Early train back to New Delhi. Left my case in the luggage room whilst I walked down to C Place for some KFC! I’d only just remembered I was on the road where I met Shakti when suddenly a tap on my shoulder.. It was Shakti! What a coincidence.
I explained I couldn’t call him as my mobile wouldn’t work, I told him I was on my was for a KFC and asked if he’d join me. I gave him my mobile to try phoning himself but before he could finish, 2 police officers took hold of him under the arms and hoisted him away from me. No idea what was said but he was slapped hard about the face several times. I thought it best to carry on walking.
Exit Shakti, enter KFC. Doesn’t taste the same as we get in the UK. Not sure what they did to the colonel’s secret recipe, throw it away and start again from scratch?
Back to the train station. pick up luggage. Taxi to Eurostar Hotel in Mahipualpur, for an overnight stay before catching my flight home. Taxi driver(s) were as usual, useless. They stopped at every hotel in the vacinity to ask the doormen where my hotel was.
