Linegard PGFM Series: The Perfect Ground Fault Interrupter
As the introduction, you might want to know a little bit about what a ground fault interrupter. This electrical device is designed to keep you from a dangerous shock. This device operates with some features to detect potentially hazardous and ground faults then disconnect power from the circuit. The ground fault is usually any amount of current above the level which also called power leakage.
Sometimes a GFI is applied on the main breaker box to protect the entire circuit from ground faults. This device is made to prevent power or electrical leakage which can produce the ground fault by shutting off the associated circuit when such leakage happens. This electrical equipment can be found in any kitchens, laundry room, bathroom, and garage in some new houses.
To explore the performance of this device and how it operates, just check the following. A GFI will compare the amount of electrical current coming into a circuit (on the black wire) with the amount leaving (on the neutral or red wire). When the circuit receives more current through the phase wire than the amount of the current which leaves through neutral wire, a ground fault happens, meaning that you just get a current leak. This device will detect as little as 0.005 amp leakage, and shut down a circuit within 0.025 seconds to prevent serious electrical shocks. For your information, a fault current as low as 4 mA to 6 mA will activate the GFI and interrupts the circuit.
When you activate this device, the fault condition is overcome. After that, the CFI will manually reset before power may be restored to the circuit. One more thing, it can be installed at different locations within a circuit.
Then we will talk about the Linegard PGFM series specifically to explore the features and performance. This device is compatible with many Airpax LEL and 209 series with 1 to 3 poles, amperages from 1 to 50 Amps, with integral shunt coils. On a ground fault, it actively separates the load by means of an Airpax hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker (LEL Series) with an integral shunt coil. This ground fault sensing module is designed to work with a UL 489 hydraulic magnetic branch circuit breaker. To support the performance, the sensing module of this GFI monitors an electrical circuit via an external differential current transformer.
UL (Underwriter Laboratory) 943 listed (GFCIs) includes all electrical circuits with voltages from any current-carrying conductor of 125VAC to ground. On the other hand, the UL 1053 compliant (ELCIs) includes all other circuits with current-carrying conductors greater than 125VAC. The product features an automatic or manual ‘safe-start’ reset. When it is mounted with the given gasket, the enclosure gets a UL NEMA 4X wet location rating (capable of standing on 600psi of direct water spray and submersion in 6 ft of water for at least 24 hours).
Talking about the applications, this module and breaker system is ideal for portable generator integration which protects all outlets on a generator and meeting the proposed requirements for generators under UL standard UL2201 UL/cUL 943 Listed and UL 1053 Compliant.
